FMCG is a constant fight for visibility and preference. You are selling to the retailer and the customer at the same time, while trends move, competitors respond and the next product is already being developed.
Sales and Marketing get unusually close to shaping what people actually choose.
FMCG & CONSUMER GOODS
In FMCG & Consumer Goods, commercial success has to survive the journey from plan to purchase.
A product can have strong consumer research, great creative and enthusiastic customers and still struggle commercially. It has to be available, correctly priced, visible in the right channels and worthwhile for the retailer, distributor or customer supporting it.
Sales professionals work across that whole equation. Securing distribution is important, but what happens afterwards determines whether the product keeps its place. Rate of sale, margin, availability, promotion, repeat purchase and the value it adds to the category all start to matter.
Marketing has its own version of the same challenge. Creating consumer demand only works when people can find and buy the product. Strong FMCG marketers understand how brand, shopper behaviour, pricing, retail execution and supply work together rather than treating the campaign as the end of the job.
The FMCG & Consumer Goods Economy
FMCG & Consumer Goods covers food, drink, household products, personal care and other high-volume consumer categories sold through grocery, convenience, wholesale, pharmacy, foodservice, ecommerce, D2C and specialist channels.
It includes large international brands, established manufacturers, private-label suppliers and smaller challenger businesses. Each works with different margins, routes to market, customer relationships and levels of negotiating power.
In the UK, manufacturers recorded £452 billion in product sales in 2025. Food manufacturing alone represented 22.9% of the total, making it the UK's largest manufacturing division. UK food, feed and drink exports were worth £25.7 billion during the year. (Office for National Statistics)
Ireland's food, beverage and tobacco manufacturing sector generated approximately €11.4 billion in GVA in 2025. Food, drink and horticulture exports also reached a record €19 billion, up 12% year on year. (Central Statistics Office)
Within those markets, however, the commercial experience varies considerably. Grocery multiples, convenience, wholesale, foodservice, pharmacy, ecommerce and D2C all create different relationships with customers and consumers.
