Sales & Marketing in Education & Training often involves communicating value long before the outcome can be proven.
Someone can enquire, apply or even start a programme without it ultimately being the right choice for them, their employer or the provider.
The value of education is usually proven later. Attendance, engagement, completion, progression and what the learner can actually do afterwards all affect whether that initial recruitment was worthwhile.
Experienced Sales and Business Development professionals become better at understanding who is really making the decision, what support the learner will need and whether the programme genuinely fits the requirement.
Marketing has a similar job. It needs to make outcomes, commitment and value clear enough for people to make a confident decision without promising something the programme cannot reliably deliver.

What employers look for in sales
Employers may be looking for someone who can:
• Understand who is really making the decision. The learner, parent, employer, L&D team, funder and procurement team may all influence the same purchase.
• Qualify for fit, not simply eligibility. A learner or employer may qualify for a programme without it being the right solution.
• Understand the funding model. Employer budgets, public funding, tuition fees, apprenticeships and commercial training create different buying behaviours.
• Develop employer relationships beyond the initial sale. In workforce development and apprenticeships, delivery affects whether there will be another cohort.
• Sell flexibility realistically. Bespoke delivery, different schedules and workplace learning can be attractive, but the provider still has to deliver them properly.
• Understand the outcome being bought. Employers may care about capability and workforce performance while learners may be thinking about qualification, confidence or career progression.
The person receiving the education may not be the person controlling the budget or final decision.

What employers look for in marketing
The stronger Education & Training marketers tend to:
• Communicate outcomes credibly. Career, qualification and progression claims need evidence behind them.
• Understand the whole recruitment journey. Awareness, enquiry, application, offer and enrolment can each lose potential learners for different reasons.
• Reduce uncertainty. Course requirements, workload, funding, support and likely outcomes often matter more than inspirational marketing language.
• Speak to different audiences properly. The learner proposition may be different from the employer, parent, school or funding proposition.
• Use reputation and relationships. Alumni, employers, schools, professional bodies and community networks can influence trust and demand.
• Differentiate programmes meaningfully. Subjects and course titles may look similar, so relevance, delivery, support, accreditation and outcomes become important.
Education marketing has to communicate outcomes, credibility and relevance to several different audiences.
Prospective learners are often not simply asking, “Do I like this course?” They may be wondering whether they have the time, confidence, money, support or ability to complete it. Good Marketing helps answer those practical questions too.
Same CV. Different Capability.
Education & Training titles can conceal very different commercial experience.
Two Business Development Managers may both show learner numbers, employer relationships and revenue targets.
One may mainly sell open-enrolment or funded programmes through comparatively short decisions; another may build long-term employer partnerships, diagnose workforce needs, shape provision with delivery teams and develop repeat cohorts over time.
The title does not show how consultative, strategic or delivery-connected the work has been.

The Education & Training Economy
+1.3%
Ireland education employment growth, year-on-year Jul 2026
THE UK PICTURE:
Education & Training covers schools, colleges, universities, private and professional training providers, apprenticeships, workforce development, online learning and commercial learning businesses. Education accounted for approximately 3.1 million UK workforce jobs in September 2025, while UK education-related exports and transnational education activity were worth an estimated £36.7 billion in 2024. International higher-education students alone generated almost £24 billion in export revenue. (Office for National Statistics; Department for Education) Explore Education Statistics
THE IRISH PICTURE: Ireland has also seen substantial growth. Employment in Education increased by around 66,000 people, or 34.3%, between Q4 2019 and Q4 2025, taking employment in the sector to roughly 258,000 people. (Central Statistics Office) CSO Cloud
Within that economy, the commercial conditions vary considerably. Recruiting an international university student, selling employer-funded professional training and developing an apprenticeship partnership may all sit within Education & Training while involving very different budgets, decision-makers and buying processes.
Building your Sales & Marketing career in Education & Training
Career progression often brings responsibility for more of the relationship between demand, enrolment and eventual outcome.
SALES & BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT
Sales careers can begin in student recruitment, employer engagement, course sales or partnership development before moving into larger employer accounts, institutional partnerships, commercial training, market development or leadership.
With greater responsibility comes more involvement in programme fit, funding, account strategy, partnerships and decisions about which opportunities the provider should pursue.
Employer-facing experience can become particularly broad.
Someone may progress from finding employers willing to buy training towards understanding workforce needs, shaping programmes with delivery teams, protecting relationships during implementation and developing future cohorts.
MARKETING
Education Marketing careers can begin across digital, campaigns, content, events, student recruitment or communications.
As responsibility grows, marketers may take on programme positioning, CRM, conversion, audience strategy, reputation and wider recruitment planning.
They may also become more involved in what happens after the enquiry.
Application drop-off, offer acceptance, induction, early attendance and learner feedback can all tell Marketing something about whether the proposition and communications are working.
That broader exposure helps marketers understand not simply how to generate interest, but how to attract people who understand what they are committing to and are more likely to succeed.
For employers
For employers, we look beyond the obvious CV match and spend time understanding the learners, buyers, funding models and outcomes behind someone's experience.
