Sound like you
AI left to run riot writes things nobody would say out loud, and readers skim past them. Used with a bit of judgement, it's a powerful tool for telling your story and getting your message across. The ideas stay yours. You decide what goes in. Leave it alone altogether and you could get left behind.
Here are some prompts that might help you keep your voice in your creations. Copy them, change the words, make them yours.
Before you start, paste two or three things you've written and liked above any of these. It gives the AI something real to copy.
Talk it out, get a draft
Record yourself rambling about the idea, then paste in the transcript. Your words stay. The filler goes.
Below is a transcript of me talking through an idea out loud. Turn it into a [email / LinkedIn post / video script]. Use my words and my phrases. Keep the way I talk. Take out the repeats and the filler, like "um" and "so yeah". Do not add any ideas I didn't say. If a bit is unclear, ask me. Don't guess. Write in UK English. Do not use em dashes. If it asks you a question, answer it. That means it's working.
Show it what you changed
Every time you edit a draft, you're telling it something. This asks it to read what you did and write the rules down.
Below is a draft you wrote, then the version I edited. Look at what I changed. Tell me what changed and why you think I changed it. Then give me 3 to 5 writing rules to follow next time. One sentence each. Base them only on what I actually changed, not on what you think good writing should be. YOUR DRAFT: [paste the original] MY VERSION: [paste your edit]
Keep the rules it gives you. Paste them at the top of the next prompt you use.
Tidy up the last bits
For when a draft is nearly there but still sounds a bit like a brochure.
You are my editor. Below is a draft. Make it sound like a person saying it out loud. Change as little as you can.
Use short sentences and plain words. Use UK English. Do not use em dashes.
If a sentence only announces that the next sentence matters, delete it. If a sentence only repeats the one before, delete it. Do not end a paragraph by summing it up. Do not add a closing line that explains why a fact matters. Do not credit opinions to unnamed experts.
Swap brochure words like leverage, unlock, journey and game-changer for what I would say out loud. Use a list only if I would read it as a list. Otherwise write sentences.
Do not add facts, numbers, names or examples. Keep every name, number and link exactly as I wrote it. If the draft is thin, tell me. Don't pad it.
Give me the edited draft first. Then tell me in a few plain sentences what you changed. If the draft already sounds fine, say so and leave it alone.
