In Technology & SaaS, early interest can look much more valuable than it really is. A prospect can love the demo, ask for a trial and keep coming back with questions without ever having enough reason, budget or internal support to buy.

Even the signed contract is only one stage.

The customer still has to implement the product, use it, see value from it and eventually decide to renew or expand. Experienced salespeople become better at recognising which opportunities have enough substance behind them to make that journey.

Marketing is working with the same reality.

High lead volumes and strong engagement can look encouraging, but experienced Tech marketers become more interested in whether the right companies are responding, whether opportunities progress and whether the message helps buyers understand why changing anything is worthwhile.

What do employers look for in Technology & SaaS Sales & Marketing professionals?

Technology experience alone does not tell you very much unless you understand the commercial model behind it.

Consideration

Commercial Fit

Experience in technology is usually only a starting point, and strong professionals may come from outside the sector. What matters more is whether they understand a similar commercial model.

This includes the target customer, buyer motivations, contract value, buying process, sales cycle, route to market and level of implementation complexity. These factors influence how demand is created, how buying decisions are shaped and how revenue is generated.

Roles we recruit in Technology & SaaS

Sales

Sales that convert adoption into growth

Chief Revenue Officer

Leads the revenue system across sales, partnerships, customer success and operations, aligning growth strategy with the company’s stage and model.

Sales Director

Builds and leads the sales organisation, defining territories, process, standards and performance across the relevant customer segments.

Account Executive

Owns qualified opportunities from discovery through evaluation, negotiation and close, with complexity varying by product and market.

Enterprise Account Director

Manages complex, high-value opportunities involving multiple stakeholders, technical validation, procurement and long-term account planning.

Partnerships and Channel Manager

Develops revenue through resellers, platforms, integrations, referral partners or strategic alliances.

What employers look for in sales

Employers may be looking for someone who can:

• Recognise real buying intent. Product interest is useful, but it is different from an important problem with budget, urgency and internal support.

• Understand the whole buying group. The first enthusiastic contact may still need Finance, IT, Security, Legal, Procurement or senior leadership on board.

• Sell the problem, not just the product. Strong sellers understand why the customer needs to change and what happens if they do nothing.

• Work with the right sales motion. High-volume SMB sales, enterprise SaaS, partnerships, product-led growth and managed services require quite different approaches.

• Think beyond the signature. Implementation, adoption, renewal and expansion affect whether the original sale ever becomes valuable.

• Learn the product properly. Technical curiosity helps salespeople ask better questions and communicate confidently without promising things the product cannot do.

Marketing

Marketing that creates and accelerates demand

Marketing Director

Sets market, brand and growth strategy across acquisition, product marketing, lifecycle and communications.

Product Marketing Manager

Defines positioning, messaging, launch strategy, competitive insight and sales enablement around the product and customer problem.

Demand Generation Manager

Creates qualified pipeline through campaigns, paid media, content, events and account-based programmes aligned with sales.

Growth Marketing Manager

Uses testing, channel optimisation and funnel analysis to improve acquisition, activation and commercially relevant conversion.

Customer Marketing Manager

Develops adoption, retention, advocacy, expansion and community programmes across the existing customer base.

What employers look for in marketing

The stronger Technology & SaaS marketers tend to:

• Understand the stage of the business. Early companies may need positioning and market learning, while scaling businesses may need repeatable pipeline, adoption or expansion.

• Look beyond lead volume. More leads are not especially useful if Sales cannot progress or convert them.

• Make technical value understandable. Buyers need to understand the problem being solved, not simply a list of features.

• Build confidence across the buying group. Customer evidence, technical content, case studies and useful sales material can reduce friction later in the process.

• Understand how the business grows. Product-led, sales-led, partner-led and enterprise models create different marketing priorities.

• Stay connected to adoption and retention. In recurring-revenue businesses, acquisition is only part of the commercial picture.

A marketer who has generated demand for a recognised SaaS category may have had a very different job from someone who had to explain an unfamiliar problem, define the ideal customer and help create a market around a new product.

Same CV. Different Capability.

“SaaS experience” can hide some fairly substantial differences.

Two Account Executives may both show quota achievement, demos and new-logo wins.

One may work in a high-volume SMB motion with short sales cycles and clear decision makers; another may manage enterprise opportunities involving technical evaluation, security, Procurement, Legal and multiple stakeholders over many months.

The same percentage of target can represent completely different levels of complexity and commercial judgement.

Professional A

Account Executive

  • Runs frequent demo-led opportunities
  • Operates across relatively short decision cycles
  • Builds performance through pace and conversion discipline

Professional B

Account Executive

  • Develops complex enterprise opportunities
  • Works across technical and security evaluation
  • Manages opportunities over much longer decision cycles
  • Navigates Procurement, Legal and multiple stakeholders

Case study

Infrastructure technology business needed a Marketing Manager during its transition towards SaaS.

We identified a marketer able to bridge an established technical product business with an evolving software proposition. The successful hire progressed with the company, later becoming CMO and leading a major rebrand as the business expanded.

Marketing Manager progressed to CMO before the business was acquired.

The Technology & SaaS Economy

THE UK PICTURE

The UK Digital and Technologies sector included more than 107,000 companies in 2024, generating an estimated £408 billion in turnover and £158 billion in GVA. It employed approximately 1.33 million people.

THE IRISH PICTURE

Technology also has an unusually large economic footprint in Ireland. The Information and Communication sector generated approximately €111.2 billion in GVA in 2024.

Behind those numbers are businesses selling everything from low-cost subscriptions to complex enterprise platforms involving implementation, security reviews, multiple stakeholders and long-term customer relationships.

Building your Sales & Marketing career in Technology & SaaS

Technology careers can move quickly, but progression is not always as simple as moving from one title to the next.

SALES

Sales professionals may begin in Sales Development or Business Development before moving into Account Executive, Enterprise Sales, Strategic Accounts, Partnerships, Customer Success or leadership.

As responsibility increases, employers usually expect more than stronger closing ability.

Senior people are more likely to be involved in complex account strategy, forecasting, larger buying groups, commercial negotiation, market development and decisions about how the company should sell.

Moving between different sales motions can also broaden a career. Someone who has worked across transactional and enterprise sales, new business and expansion, or direct and partner channels may develop a much wider view of how technology businesses create revenue.

MARKETING

Technology marketing careers often begin within a specialism such as content, digital, demand generation, product marketing or growth.

As marketers become more senior, those areas usually become more connected.

A senior marketer may be responsible for positioning, ideal customer definition, pipeline, product launches, sales enablement, customer evidence, lifecycle activity and how Marketing works alongside Product, Sales and Customer Success.

The job can also change substantially as a company grows. Someone who has marketed an early-stage product may have learned through experimentation and direct customer feedback, while someone from a larger SaaS business may bring deeper experience of scale, specialist teams, established channels and more predictable data.

Both can be useful. The environment they developed in usually tells you more than the technology label on its own.

For employers

For employers, we look beyond the obvious CV match and spend time understanding what someone has actually done, the environment they have worked in and how relevant that experience is to the role.
